Week long celebrations for 10th Foundation Day start with an invited lecture by Dr. Colin Summerhayes, Executive Director of Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research on April 1, 2010

Dr. Colin Summerhayes, Executive Director of Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) will deliver a lecture entitled “Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment” on 1st April 2010 to begin the 10th Foundation Day Celebrations of NCAOR. The function is being chaired by Dr. S. Shetye, Director NIO, Goa. SCAR is a committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU), and is responsible for the initiation, promotion and co-ordination of scientific research in Antarctica along with providing independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty system. Dr. Summerhayes is an expert in the oceanography, geology and continental margin upwelling systems with extensive marine geological research in the New Zealand Sub-Antarctic region. He has produced enormous scientific work comprising more than 200 research publications to his credit in varied fields of marine sciences. His talk will principally provide an insight in to how the physical & biogeochemical processes taking place in Antarctica and its surrounding Southern Ocean affect the planet Earth. The talk will also focus on the adverse effects of the presently experienced global warming on Antarctica and how it is affecting ice-melting in different regions of Antarctica and consequent sea-level rise.
