INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON DEEP-SEA DRILLING IN THE INDIAN OCEAN

Considering that the IODP is entering into a new phase from late 2013 and drilling in the Indian Ocean is likely to be taken up in 2014, an international workshop to discuss various proposals as well as new scientific themes of relevance to the Indian Ocean sector was organised in Goa on 17-18 October, 2011. The workshop was jointly convened by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), the nodal agency for IODP activities in India, the Australia IODP (ANZIC) and the IODP-MI.  Over a hundred scientists from India, USA, Japan, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia participated in this two-day event.  This international IODP workshop was hosted by India for the first time and provided a unique platform for international geo-scientists to interact and prioritize existing ideas as well as explore new research frontiers having larger societal relevance such as climate change, earthquake hazards, biotechnology and natural resource potential etc.  

 The international workshop which was held at Cidade de Goa, Dona Paula was inaugurated on the morning of 17th October (Monday) by Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in the distinguished presence of eminent scientists like Prof. U R. Rao,  Prof. V. K. Gaur and Dr. Kiyoshi Suyehiro, the CEO of IODP.
