SCAR Fellowship Award 2010-11 for Dr. Sunil Kumar Shukla |
Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), a body of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the leading organization for facilitating and coordinating Antarctic research has awarded its prestigious Fellowship for 2010-11 to Dr Sunil Kumar Shukla , Research Sc ‘C’ in the Antarctic Science Division of NCAOR.The SCAR Fellowship Program is designed to encourage the active involvement of early career scientists in Antarctic research from 35 SCAR countries, to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in the field of Antarctic science.Dr. Shukla will be working on “Diatom-based paleoclimate inferences from Antarctic to Sub-tropical Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean” with special emphasis on diatom census counts and biometry to infer palaeo -productivity which would provide insight to decipher past climatic signals stored in Southern Indian Ocean sediment cores from different oceanic regimes, as also it would be useful to understand the rates at which CO2 may have been out-gassed from the oceans in the geologically recent past. He will be working at the University of Bordeaux 1, France under the guidance of Dr. Xavier Crosta (http://www.epoc.u-bordeaux.fr/indiv/XCrosta/) during September – November, 2010. This study would fulfill three major SCAR’ scientific goals: Antarctica in the global climate systems (AGCS), Antarctic Climate Evolution (ACE) and Evolution and biodiversity in the Antarctica (EBA).
