The consultants interacted individually with representative from each division/section. Quality Manual, Procedure Manual Sheet and Process Control Sheets were prepared during the training programme
VI. Installation & commissioning of various major instruments/ systems
a) Ice core Laboratory 1. Installation and Commissioning of Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer
The Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometer at NCAOR’s Ice Core laboratory was installed and successfully commissioned on the 5th of May 2006. This instrument purchased from GV Instruments, UK, and of the ‘Isoprime’ make, has the capability of measuring stable isotopes of Oxygen and Hydrogen in water samples and those of Oxygen and Carbon in carbonate samples.
Application of this SIRMS for various samples like: i) Antarctic Ice Core samples and snow samples (Oxygen and Hydrogen isotopes) ii) Marine carbonates from of Southern Ocean and Antarctic region (Oxygen & Carbon) iii) Nitrogen and Carbon isotope from marine sediment samples by continuous flow method. Isotopes of Hydrogen and Oxygen in ice cores are useful in studying paleotemperatures and can be also useful as a dating tool. The instrument is also attached to an Elemental Analyser of the ‘Eurovector’ make for solid sample analysis.
2. Installation and Commissioning of Total Organic Carbon analyzer:
The Total Organic Carbon analyzer purchased from Shimadzu, Japan, was installed and successfully commissioned on 10th of March, 2006. Application of the system: i) It can measure Total Carbon, Total Organic Carbon and Inorganic Carbon in marine sediments, biological samples of Antarctic region & Southern Ocean, through a Solid Sample Module. ii) It can also measure Total carbon, Total Organic Carbon, Inorganic Carbon and Total Nitrogen in liquids such as Wastewater, Seawater, Antarctic samples etc. for a wide range of concentrations. The instrument is equipped with an auto sampler for liquid sample analysis. 3. Commissioning of the Liquid Nitrogen Plant (LN2)Looking at the need of the major analytical facilities like Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (SIRMS) and SEM-EDS installed at NCAOR, having large requirement of Liquid Nitrogen consumption on day to day basis (>25 litres per day), a financial sanction was obtained for a Liquid Nitrogen Plant (LN2) in the year 2005-2006 and the same was procured in May 2006, to serve the purpose.
The model of the LN2 system procured is StirLIN-1 Economy, of STIRLING make (Netherlands), which has the capacity to produce 5 litres of liquid nitrogen per hour. The system has a storage tank of 200 litres capacity. The system was installed and successfully commissioned on the 23rd of August 2006. The system is fully automated; operator friendly and found to be sturdy and robust, working continuously till the tank is filled. From the time of installation of the system, the liquid nitrogen produced is being used for analysis of number of samples using the instruments SIRMS, SEM-EDS and for various biological purposes of the institute.
4. Ice Core Drilling Programme & Laboratory progress:
i) The first year of long term programme of NCAOR-GSI collaboration in Antarctic Ice Core Drilling has been started in the recent XXV IAE. ii) The joint team had retrieved an ice core of 64.9 m length from the Humboldt glacier region of CDML, East Antarctica and the ice samples had reached by frozen cargo to NCAOR cold laboratories during the May 2006. iii) The archival of the ice core samples have been made in the – 20 ˚ Cold Lab and the processing of the sample for various analysis is in progress. iv) During the forthcoming XXVI IAE, the NCAOR-GSI team has proposed for the ice core drilling in the in the costal region near India Bay.
b) Polar Environmental Science Laboratory
Details of equipments 1. Ion Chromatogram, 2. AAS Installation is in Progress, 3. COR reactor,Multiparameter probe, 4. Flame photometer, colorimeter, 5. Spectrometer,pH/turbiditimeter, 6. DO meter, 7. BOD Track Apparatus
