A dedicated “Satellite Communication Link” connecting Indian Research Base “Maitri’ in Antarctica and National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (NCAOR), Vasco-da-Gama, Goa was inaugurated by Dr. P. S. Goel, Chairman, Recruitment and Assessment Centre Defence Research and Development Organization in the presence of Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences and Chairman, Earth Commission on Tuesday, 10th March 2009. This facility has been created by installing a 3 meters C-band antenna enclosed in a RAYDOME at Maitri and a corresponding 7.2 meters antenna at NCAOR, Goa in collaboration with Space Applications Centre, (SAC) Ahmedabad & Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Hyderabad. Both these stations communicate through a geostationary- Intelsat IS 1002 satellite. The look angle of antenna at Maitri is 10O towards N 12O W and at NCAOR, Goa 05O towards S 86OW. Communication at such low angles is extremely difficult and has been made possible only by tremendous efforts put in by a team of SAC and ECIL engineers lead by Dr. S. S. Valdiya in designing the special antennas and the control systems. While expressing gratitude to the all the participating organizations Mr. Rasik Ravindra, Director NCAOR said that transportation and installation of the 3 meters C-band antenna enclosed in a RAYDOME with all its accessories at Maitri in Antarctica involving herculean efforts was accomplished in a less than a month in the austral summer of 2008 by a team of scientists lead by Shri Arun Chaturvedi, leader of the 27th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica and the Voyage leader Shri Ajay Dhar. M. Javed Beg, Programme Director (Logistics & ICT) said that the satcom link will bring about a paradigm shift in scientific & logistic operations, planning & coordination by providing a 24x7 connectivity @1 mbps that facilitates online collaboration, online real time data transfer, video conferencing, email and web browsing facility, live television broadcast.
