Scientists from NCPOR, Goa and CES & HS, Itanagar are monitoring the Khangri Glacier in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng Basin since 2024. The team has been carrying out annual glacier measurements— and this season’s findings are :
May 2026 observations recorded ~50 cm of winter snow accumulation, comparatively higher than the last year.
5 ablation stakes were installed by drilling 8 m deep into the glacier, combined with DGPS surveys to decode glacier flow dynamics.
Repeated photography and visual interpretation show glacier terminus retreat and the formation of a proglacial lake — powerful signs of a changing Himalayan cryosphere.
The mountains are sending a clear climate signal.
