The Joint Programming Initiative “Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe” (JPI Climate) was established as part of the effort to deal with climate change as one of the Grand Challenges. JPI Climate seeks to facilitate integrated climate knowledge and decision support services for societal innovation towards a climate-friendly and climate-proof Europe. JPI Climate provides a platform for aligning national research priorities, coordinating the research base in Europe, and responding to the needs of the European society, through innovative inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches and flexible collaborative governance.

The Belmont Forum is a group of the world’s major and emerging funders of global environmental change research and international science councils. It aims to accelerate delivery of the environmental research needed to remove critical barriers to sustainability by aligning and mobilizing international resources. Belmont Forum funding is intended to add value to existing national investments and support international partnership in interdisciplinary and transdiscplinary scientific endeavors.

This call for proposals aims to contribute to the overall challenge of developing climate services with a focus on inter-regional linkages role in climate variability and predictability. Major impediments indeed still exist to having efficient climate services at regional and local level, because of little or poorly understood climate processes (in part caused by a paucity of observations), inadequate dissemination of scientific knowledge, conflicts between climatic and non-climatic stressors and lack of action by decision makers and the human society at large.

Projects should address one or more of the following topics:

Topic 1- Understanding past and current variability and trends of regional extremes

Topic 2- Predictability and prediction skills for near‐future variability and trends of regional extremes

Topic 3‐ Co‐construction of near term forecast products with users

JPI Climate and Belmont Forum are seeking proposals from consortia consisting of partners from the participating countries  as well as others. Consortia should preferably bring together different scientific disciplines to address the issues within the scope of the described call topics. They should be genuinely collaborative and demonstrate that more will be achieved by working together than by individual partners working on their own.

Within each selected consortium, funding of the participating researchers will be provided by their respective national funding organisations according to their normal terms and conditions for project funding. Funding decisions will be made early 2016. The amount of public funding available for collaborative research projects through this call is estimated to approximately EUR 15 million.
